General Update October 2022

Project Gateway continues to work hard and make a difference in people’s lives even through these trying times.

Gateway School of Fashion:

During the past 3 or 4 months of 2022 we have seen the Gateway School of Fashion flourish at the Durban July Handicap and 7 of our learners were “tagged” in the Top 10 of the Fashion category they were entered into.  Some also won prizes and came first and second in certain categories.  All learners are busy preparing for the end of year Fashion Show which will be an exciting event for them all and their families and supporters.

Gateway Christian School:

Our Gateway Christian School children have been very busy this year with many outings and events which they all thoroughly enjoyed.

They had a pajama day with movies.  They held an athletics day and many of our parents attended. The traffic Department attended our school and gave the children road rules and regulations and a fuller understanding of road safety. On Spring Day of 2022, the Fire Department came and showed the children what they do and the safety aspects around that.  Grade 7 held a very successful market day and they were able to put their economics learning into practice.  The school celebrated Heritage Day and the children all dressed up accordingly. We played in soccer and netball tournaments against other schools and played chess against another school.  Scripture Union visited us and gave us a drama play.  The reading club is going very well and children are benefiting from this.  The Unusual Kindness programme has collected non-perishable food stuff and donated them to the Gateway Crèche programme. Some Grades have visited the Museum on site.

CARE Ministries:

Our Crèche programme continues to be active and our Social Worker visits the 15 creches under our care on a regular basis.  The number of children are growing each time she visits them and they are all actively involved in vegetable gardening as well.  Our “Community feeding Communities” garden project is also growing well and very soon we will have an additional 5 Community gardens added to the existing 4 that we support.  That means that people in 9 Wards have access to fresh vegetables.

MUSEUM:

We are based in “The Old Prison” in Pietermaritzburg and have a world class state of the art Museum on site depicting the history of The Old Prison and the city in general from the early 1800’s through to freedom in 1994.  Tours are available at a minimal cost and we encourage all ages to visit our historical site.
